What is a book nook

A book nook is something that has been around for decades in other forms. Examples are dolls houses, model railways, plastic aircraft kits and other models. It is a miniature world showing a room normally with lots of tiny items and as the name implies, in most cases, lots of individual books.

Types of book nook kits

There are basically 3 types of kits I classify as book nooks

  • Room kits
  • Street scene kits
  • Custom kits

Each of these get more difficult, more time consuming and more frustrating 😀 There is sometimes, like in my case, a general progression through the different stages, but this is a personal preference. I know from my book nook Facebook community that a lot of people are very happy just building lots of room kits – make sure you have lots of storage 😀 There are also a number of other things I build which I wouldn’t classify as book nooks but these are great fun. Two examples

Difficulty Levels

In my own opinion there are 4 different levels of difficulty.

  • Beginner kit – predominantly plug & play
  • Intermediate kit – Requires structural gluing
  • Advanced kit – complex wirings, very careful alignment
  • Custom “kit” – apart from buying a shell, everything is hand made by you including furniture

Tools required

Beginner book nook kits do not really need a lot of kit as they are generally fully-assembly without tools. I do recommend a few basics based on my experience as even beginner kits vary

  • Cutting Mat
  • Craft Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Glue

Build time expectations

How long does it take to build a book nook? The honest answer is: it depends on the kit, your experience level, and how perfect you want the final result to be.

Some models can be finished in a single evening, while others can take weeks if you take your time and focus on detail.

Beginner kit – 4 to 6 hours

Intermediate kit – 20+ hours

Advanced kit – 30 to 40 hours

Custom kit – many months

Mistakes beginners make

Building your first book nook is exciting — but beginners often make the same avoidable mistakes. After building multiple kits and custom projects, I’ve seen the same problems appear again and again. This is a simple list of the most commons mistakes

  • Rushing in to quickly to start building the kit
  • Breaking delicate parts
  • Preparing for the first step
  • Losing or misplacing parts
  • The wrong glue
  • Lighting mistakes
  • Time and enjoyment

Best beginner kit

This is obviously a very personal choice and I know most people in my Facebook community would have a different recommendation. When you select a kit it generally has a number of similar comparison points.

This is in the description on Amazon for “Corner Coffee Shop”【Assembly Friendly for Craft Beginners and Teenagers】The horizontal book nook kit includes 294 wood pre-cut pieces, it comes with colored instructions which guides you to set up step by step, it takes about 2-4 hours to finish it.

In my opinion this was slightly more difficult than the Tavern in the corner which is also very pleasing to look at. Click here for detailed review
