Book nooks are wonderful things, but they can also become an expensive hobby remarkably quickly.
Spend any time in a book nook Facebook group and you will see beautiful new releases costing £30, £40, £50 or considerably more. Add several kits to your wish list and suddenly what started as an inexpensive craft hobby doesn’t look quite so inexpensive.
But there is another side to the hobby that we probably don’t talk about enough.
What if you simply can’t afford £30 or £40 for your next book nook?
Perhaps money is particularly tight this month. Perhaps you’re retired, between jobs, dealing with rising household bills or simply can’t justify spending that amount on a hobby.
That doesn’t mean you have to stop building.
In fact, we went looking to see just how cheaply you can currently buy a complete book nook — and some of the results genuinely surprised us.
Can You Really Buy a Book Nook for Under £10?
Apparently, yes.
When we searched the UK market in August 2026, we found listings for complete-looking DIY book nook kits at remarkably low prices.
Among the examples we found were:

Prices and availability change constantly, particularly on marketplaces such as Amazon, Temu and AliExpress, so treat these as examples of what can be found rather than permanent recommendations.
But they demonstrate something important:
A book nook does not have to cost £30, £40 or £50.
The £6 Book Nook
The biggest surprise during our search was finding book nook listings at around £6–£8.
At that price, expectations obviously need to be realistic.
You’re unlikely to receive the beautifully packaged experience of a premium Rolife, Tonecheer or ETKVR kit. Instructions may be less polished. Materials might be thinner. Parts may require a little more persuasion and you might need to supply your own glue or batteries.
But that’s not really the point.
If somebody gets several enjoyable evenings of building from a £6 or £8 kit and ends up with something they are proud to put on their bookshelf, that represents extraordinary value for money.
Don’t Automatically Assume Temu Is Cheapest
This was another interesting discovery.
Temu and AliExpress have a reputation for being the cheapest places to buy book nooks, and they frequently are.
But not always.
During our searches we found extremely inexpensive kits on Amazon Marketplace too.
So before pressing the Buy button, spend five minutes checking the same or similar kit elsewhere.
Search:
Amazon → Temu → AliExpress → eBay
And compare the delivered price, not merely the headline price.
A £7 kit with £4 postage isn’t cheaper than a £9 kit delivered free.
Beware of the £80 Version of a £20 Kit
Regular Book Nook Workshop readers will know that we’ve discussed this problem before.
Many book nook kits are sold through multiple retailers and resellers, sometimes under different names and at dramatically different prices.
A kit appearing in an attractive social-media advertisement for £60 doesn’t necessarily contain anything different from the apparently identical £25 kit you saw elsewhere.
If you’re building on a limited budget, reverse-image searching and comparing model numbers can save a considerable amount of money.
Don’t assume that a more expensive listing means a better kit.
Older Kits Can Be Absolute Bargains
Everyone understandably gets excited about new releases.
That’s also where some of the highest prices tend to be.
Instead, search for kits released a year or two ago.
Retailers eventually need to clear old inventory, and yesterday’s £35 book nook can become today’s £15 bargain.
The model hasn’t suddenly become worse because something newer has appeared.
In fact, an older kit with hundreds of completed builds behind it can sometimes be a safer purchase than a brand-new release.
Look for Vouchers Before You Buy
Marketplace pricing has become increasingly complicated.
Amazon frequently offers tick-box vouchers. Temu and AliExpress run promotions and coupons. Manufacturers sometimes offer discount codes, and retailers periodically clear particular designs.
Never assume the price displayed when you first see a kit is necessarily the price you need to pay.
A few minutes searching can make a meaningful difference when every pound matters.
Consider Second-Hand — Including Unbuilt Kits
Facebook Marketplace, eBay, charity shops and local selling groups are worth watching.
People buy book nooks with the best intentions and never build them.
Others receive kits as presents and decide they’re not interested.
That creates a small but potentially very useful second-hand market for completely unused kits.
An opened box isn’t necessarily a problem either, but check carefully that all the boards, electronics and instructions are present before buying.
Swap Rather Than Buy
This is something the book nook community could probably do much more often.
Most experienced builders eventually accumulate a stash.
Some of those kits may never actually get built.
If you have an unopened kit that no longer interests you, another builder may have exactly the same problem with a completely different kit.
Swap them.
Two people get a new project and nobody spends anything other than postage.
Don’t Forget Miniatures and Smaller Builds
A huge £50 book nook isn’t automatically five times as enjoyable as a £10 miniature.
Smaller kits can still provide several hours of crafting.
If what you enjoy is the actual process of building rather than simply owning the finished model, consider the equation:
cost ÷ hours of enjoyment
A £10 kit that takes eight enjoyable hours to build has cost around £1.25 per hour of entertainment.
Compared with many hobbies, that’s remarkably inexpensive.
Use What You Already Have
Experienced builders often accumulate an extraordinary collection of leftovers:
- LEDs
- wire
- miniature plants
- beads
- furniture
- printed paper
- wooden offcuts
- figures
- spare signs
- glue
- paint
Before buying another kit, have a look through the infamous book nook bits box.
You may already have most of what you need to create a small scene of your own.
A homemade book nook doesn’t have to be architecturally perfect. Sometimes the slightly eccentric ones have far more personality than anything supplied in a box.
And Please Don’t Be Embarrassed About Having a Budget
This is perhaps the most important part of this article.
Book Nook Workshop features some spectacular kits. Some are inexpensive and some decidedly aren’t.
But owning expensive kits doesn’t make anyone a better book nook builder.
The person carefully building an £8 kit at their kitchen table belongs to exactly the same community as someone assembling a £100 premium model in a dedicated workshop.
The enjoyment comes from building it.
Not from the price printed on the box.
