A Beautiful Mediterranean Escape with Outstanding Lighting

Sunset Isle is one of Rolife’s latest book nooks, inspired by the relaxed atmosphere of a Mediterranean coastal village. Combining coloured plywood, MDF, printed cardboard, transparent acrylic, plastic details, artificial flowers and a surprisingly sophisticated lighting system, it offers a varied and enjoyable building experience.

Having now built more than forty book nooks from many different manufacturers, I can honestly say that Sunset Isle ranks among the most enjoyable builds I have completed. It is not the most mechanically complex model, but it is exceptionally well engineered, pleasant to assemble and produces a beautiful final display.

Like all my reviews, this one evaluates the model exactly as supplied by the manufacturer. Any customisations I made are described separately so that readers can clearly distinguish between the original kit and optional improvements.

What’s in the Box?

As expected from Rolife, the presentation is excellent.

The kit combines coloured plywood, MDF sheets, printed cardboard parts, transparent acrylic pieces, plastic components, artificial flowers, wiring and several self-adhesive decorations. Instead of relying on a single material, Rolife uses each one where it makes the most sense, resulting in a model that looks richer than traditional plywood-only kits.

The lighting system is also unusual for Rolife. Instead of the typical two or three LEDs, Sunset Isle includes three individual LEDs together with an LED strip. During the build it quickly becomes clear why every one of them is needed.

Build Quality

The manufacturing quality is exactly what I have come to expect from Rolife.

Both the plywood and MDF parts are precisely cut, all joints fit perfectly and I never encountered any components requiring sanding or adjustment. The tolerances are excellent throughout the entire build.

Rolife describes the kit as a glueless assembly, and that description is fully justified. Every structural component locks together securely without requiring glue.

Personally, I still reinforce many joints with a small amount of adhesive, particularly on models that will later be transported to exhibitions. This is purely my personal preference rather than a necessity.

One pleasant surprise was the supplied double-sided tape. Normally I prefer glue, but Rolife’s tape is genuinely pleasant to work with. It peels easily, holds securely and is significantly better than many tapes supplied with comparable kits.

Building Experience

The construction progresses in a logical sequence and never becomes repetitive.

Assembly starts with the terrace furniture and decorative details before gradually moving to the left and right buildings, followed by the pergola, rear scenery and finally the roof.

The mixture of different materials keeps the build interesting throughout. The paper flowers and foliage were also better than I expected. Although I generally prefer three-dimensional plants, several of the supplied paper elements look surprisingly convincing once assembled.

The wiring is straightforward. Despite using more lighting than a typical Rolife kit, the instructions clearly show every connection and should not present difficulties even for first-time builders.

Overall, I would describe the build as relaxing rather than challenging.

Design & Visual Effects

This is where Sunset Isle stands out.

The Mediterranean architecture, blue shutters, warm stone colours and abundant greenery immediately establish the atmosphere of a small seaside village.

Rolife also makes excellent use of mirrors on both side walls and the rear section. From normal viewing angles they extend the scene remarkably well and create the impression that the streets continue far beyond the physical boundaries of the book nook.

Another highlight is the sea.

Rather than constructing complicated waves, Rolife simply places a corrugated transparent acrylic sheet over a printed sea background. It is an elegant solution that creates a surprisingly convincing impression of moving water.

Behind the sea sits the illuminated sunset background.

The hidden horseshoe-shaped LED strip creates a warm glow behind the printed horizon, producing one of the nicest sunset effects I have seen in a commercial book nook.

Lighting

The lighting system consists of three individual LEDs together with one LED strip.

Each light serves a different purpose, illuminating the buildings, pergola and sunset independently.

The wire lengths are generous, leaving plenty of room during assembly, and the wiring instructions are easy to follow.

The only small issue I noticed was that one LED beneath the pergola remained visible from the normal viewing angle. I solved this simply by adding one additional decorative lemon, which now hides the LED completely.

The final lighting effect is one of the strongest features of the entire model.

The lighting is controlled by a touch sensor and offers two operating modes. Short touches switch between the modes: the first illuminates the entire model, while the second turns off the central pergola light, leaving only the patio lamp, the illuminated sunset, and the distant village lights, creating a beautiful twilight atmosphere. A long touch switches the lighting off completely.

Another clever design feature is the transparent roof over the rear section of the bungalow. It allows light from the hidden LEDs to spill gently onto the ocean and the distant village, enhancing the reflections on the textured water and adding even more depth to the sunset scene. It is a subtle detail, but one that contributes significantly to the overall atmosphere of the finished model.

Customisation Potential

Interestingly, Sunset Isle is one of those rare kits that doesn’t actually require customisation.

Built exactly as supplied, it already looks excellent.

Nevertheless, it offers plenty of opportunities for builders who enjoy adding personal touches. Unlike some kits where modifications correct weaknesses, here they simply enhance an already very good design.

My Customisations

During the build I carried out several modifications:

  • Replaced the pergola lemons with custom 3D-printed lemons.
  • Created raised “2.5D” lemons on the front tree using yellow UV resin.
  • Sanded and painted the leaf edges to reduce their flat appearance.
  • Reshaped the tree trunk and branches for a more natural look.
  • Replaced selected paper greenery with artificial plants.
  • Added climbing vines to several walls.
  • Replaced one flowerpot with a 3D-printed version.
  • Replaced the blue table rose with another pink flower.
  • Added a 3D-printed seagull.
  • Added a 3D-printed cat on the roof.
  • Replaced the supplied wooden “rock” with a real stone.
3D printed half lemons added

The most successful modification was undoubtedly the pergola lemons. Replacing the flat printed lemons with 3D-printed versions dramatically improved one of the most visible features of the model.

The UV resin lemons on the front tree also produced a surprisingly convincing result.

Several readers have already asked how these modifications were made, so I will publish separate step-by-step tutorials on BookNookWorkshop.com explaining each of these techniques.

Difficulty

Despite its detailed appearance, Sunset Isle is surprisingly beginner friendly.

The construction sequence is logical, the instructions are excellent and none of the individual assemblies are particularly difficult.

Builders with no previous experience should have little trouble completing the model successfully, while experienced builders will still find enough variety to keep the project enjoyable.

Final Verdict

Sunset Isle is another excellent example of how much Rolife’s designs have evolved in recent years.

The engineering is excellent, manufacturing quality is first class, assembly is enjoyable throughout, and the final appearance is beautiful. The lighting, mirrors and sunset background combine to create a display that feels larger and deeper than the physical size of the model.

There are only two criticisms worth mentioning. I would still prefer proper electrical connectors or soldered joints instead of twisted wires, and I would very much like Rolife to introduce a full front dust cover on future models.

Neither issue significantly affects the enjoyment of the build.

If you are looking for a relaxing project with excellent engineering, beautiful lighting and plenty of opportunities for optional customisation, Sunset Isle is very easy to recommend. It is one of my favourite Rolife book nooks to date and a kit that I would happily build again.
