Butterfly Collection Room – ETKVR

Built & reviewed by David Richards

This is my fifth build from ETKVR and once again the quality doesn’t disappoint. There are some very common factors about these kits:

  • Quality of materials is excellent
  • Instructions are very clear to follow
  • Everything you need (apart from batteries) is including in the kit
  • Multiple tones of brown are used in the build which gives a very clear 3D impression.

In my opinion ETKVR could take these to a premium kit without too much extra effort but more of that later.

Summary Table

General Build

This is a very standard book nook apart from you have 2 storeys but they are classic dimensions with the front being the only opening into this miniature world of butterflies.

Like the majority of their kits there is a major amount of furniture assembly before you attach anything to the main base so make sure you have enough work space to store these small pieces. The manual is very good in that it references the stage number where the furniture was built so it is far easier to recognise it to slot into place. Other manufactures show a vague picture and you have to guess what the piece is by zooming in with your camera!

Lots of furniture!

Standard start to most book nooks where you are:

  • Covering books (52)
  • Creating folding books (3)
  • Rolling scrolls (9) Tip: I cut the end off a cotton bud to roll the scrolls tight and these create the perfect size

For 31 pages out of a total of 42 of the lovely A5 colour instruction manual you are constructing the interior furniture and adding some decoration onto the walls. This is predominantly a snap and click kit but a nookers intuition lets you know when glue may help and in this case it is the stairs. All the stairs in all the kits are relatively easy to build but as you go higher and are putting pressure on they sometimes collapse and you have to start again – this is when I used the glue.

High quality staircase

The only minor flaw in their kits is the adhesive that is used for the book covers and the stair carpet is not strong enough and you see them unwrapping so a tad more glue is often applied.

A lot of the furniture doesn’t use slots to secure it so there is more glue used here than on some other kits

Lighting

Generally the lighting on ETKVR kits is good and relatively straight forward to install. They do use the same colour for all LEDs but on the initial diagram show the length in cms. My preference is to have colour codes wires for the LEDs so you are 100% sure you are putting the right light in the right place. With 6 LEDs you do have a nicely lit book book.

Final Verdict

I would recommend this kit to a modeller who has done 2 or 3 kits before as there are a few slightly more difficult steps but you can generally rely on ETKVR and their other brands to give you a good and relaxing experience. In terms of taking this from a basic kit to a premium kit. I would do the following:

  • A couple more 3D items, basically you have a marble. As these is centred around butterflies then maybe a nice 3D one which you could paint in your own style.
  • The tablecloth, carpet and cushions could be in fabric which would be a nice touch
  • There is a blue round window on the upper storey – a blue light focussed on this would change the vibe.
