Combining a working clock with a richly layered gothic Halloween scene, it delivers an impressive finished display without demanding hours of complicated assembly. It took approximately 90 minutes to complete and is a genuine beginner-level project that would also make a great family craft.

Instructions and Part Preparation

The colour instructions are clearly labelled, showing both the part numbers and the correct orientation for installation. The pieces are easily removed from their boards. I recommend pressing them out from the back towards the printed face, which helps keep any splintering on the rear of the pieces.

Any splintering can be tidied with the included filing board, which is also useful for smoothing the small break points left after removing pieces from the sheets.

Engineering and Assembly

The clock uses a mortise-and-tenon construction, allowing the main structure to be assembled without glue. The pieces slot together firmly, while the slight flexibility of the plywood provides just enough give during assembly and helps hold everything securely once fitted.

There are only a limited number of layered pieces. These can be attached with the supplied self-adhesive dots, although you can use your own glue if preferred.

A Real Working Clock

The clock mechanism is assembled with the pendulum and is straightforward to install using the supplied hardware and wooden wrench. Once the mechanism is secured, the clock hands are fitted to complete the working clock. It requires one AA battery.

A rear panel screws into position to cover the mechanism opening and support the back panels. This is one of those kits where the functional element feels properly integrated into the design rather than simply added as an afterthought.

Excellent UV Printing and Layering

The print quality is one of the strongest aspects of Mysterious Castle. The UV printing is exceptionally clear, with detailed artwork used throughout the model.

Particularly clever is the illusion that the clock face and Jack-o’-lanterns are illuminated. There are no lights involved here: the effect is created entirely through the artwork, colour and layering. It is remarkably convincing and helps explain the high design score.

Two Ways to Display Mysterious Castle

The completed clock offers two display options: tabletop or wall mounted.

For tabletop display, the pendulum is not used and the included pendulum-lock piece prevents the arm from swinging. Wall mounting allows you to use the full pendulum: a layered ghost positioned in front of an ornamental disc hanging from a rusted-chain design. It adds considerable character to the finished piece.

Build Experience

The entire build took me approximately 90 minutes. My only issue was self-inflicted: I reversed two pieces during assembly, but they were easily removed and corrected.

That straightforward construction makes Mysterious Castle particularly suitable for beginners. It would also work very well as a family Halloween craft because the build is interesting without becoming frustrating or overly long.

The Finished Mysterious Castle

The completed clock is a multi-layered feast for the eyes: a gothic castle surrounded by bats, dead and withered trees and familiar Halloween imagery including a skull, ghost and Jack-o’-lanterns.

It manages to be decorative, functional and fun at the same time. For Halloween enthusiasts and fans of classic gothic horror imagery, it is a particularly appealing display piece.

Final Verdict

93.5/100 is an excellent result. Mysterious Castle combines precise engineering, superb UV artwork, very clear instructions and an unusually effective functional element in its working clock. The clever printed lighting illusion is a highlight, while the short, glue-free main construction makes this an accessible project for newcomers.

Most importantly, the finished model has enough depth and visual detail to look far more elaborate than its 90-minute build time suggests. A true treat for Halloween and classic horror fans.
