Introduction:

There comes a moment in almost every book nook build when you stop, stare at what you’ve just assembled and think:

“That’s not supposed to look like that.”

It may be a wall that doesn’t quite meet another wall. A door that refuses to close. A light that stubbornly remains in the dark. Or, most ominously of all, a mysterious leftover piece sitting on the workbench.

Before you reach for the glue, the swear box or the nearest bin, don’t panic.

The chances are it can be fixed.

The first question is simply: Is the kit broken, or did I build it wrong?

And unfortunately, the answer isn’t always the one we’re hoping for.

There is also a third possibility.

You built it correctly, the kit is perfectly fine, and you are simply having one of those days when a piece of MDF has somehow developed a personal vendetta against you.

It happens.

Usually just after you’ve announced to somebody that this build is going brilliantly.


The Piece That Doesn’t Fit

Yes, I know. You followed that perfectly.

But one tiny component being installed incorrectly several steps earlier can make everything afterwards appear to be wrong.

This is one of the great laws of book nook building:

A mistake on page 12 will usually reveal itself on page 47.

And it will do so quietly.

It won’t announce itself with flashing lights or a helpful little message saying, “Hello, remember me? You put me in upside down three hours ago.”

No.

It will wait.

It will allow you to build another 35 pieces around it before revealing its existence at the worst possible moment.

Then you will stare at it.

It will stare back.

Neither of you will be happy!


The Wall That Refuses to Sit Straight

You’ve carefully assembled your walls and everything looks fine.

Then you stand back.

It’s leaning.

Not dramatically. Just enough to annoy you every time you look at it.

Before reaching for the glue, check that the base is sitting completely flat and that the joints are properly seated.

MDF and plywood components can sometimes have tiny tabs, slots or edges that need to be pushed fully home.

And this is where clamps can become your best friend.

Hold everything square, check it from several angles and give the adhesive time to set.

Don’t rely on your eye alone.

Something can look perfectly straight from the front and resemble the Leaning Tower of Pisa from the side.

The dangerous bit is when you convince yourself that it is actually straight.

You rotate the build slightly.

Still leaning.

You rotate it again.

Still leaning.

You move it to another room.

Still leaning.

Eventually you realise the problem isn’t the book nook.

It’s that your definition of “straight” has become remarkably flexible.

Do yourself a favour and check it properly before the glue sets.

Your future self will thank you.

Your future self may also stop speaking to you if you don’t.


The Door That Doesn’t Open

This is particularly annoying because the instructions will quite happily show you a beautiful little door.

Your finished version, however, appears to have been professionally sealed shut.

Don’t force it.

First, check whether paint, paper, glue or another component is catching around the edges.

If the door is supposed to move, there should normally be enough clearance for it to do so.

And remember that adding several layers of paint or decorative paper can subtly change the fit.

If it moved perfectly before decorating but doesn’t afterwards, you’ve probably found your culprit.

This is also why it’s a good idea to test moving parts before permanently fixing everything around them.

A revolutionary concept, admittedly.

It is amazing how often we discover this principle only after permanently gluing the offending part into place.

You will then spend ten minutes gently pushing the door.

Then another ten minutes pushing it slightly harder.

Then you will tell yourself it only needs “a little encouragement.”

It doesn’t.

It needs you to admit that you should have tested it earlier.


The Light That Doesn’t Work

Now we’re into the really worrying stuff.

You’ve spent hours building your miniature world, connected the battery pack and switched it on.

Nothing.

You switch it off.

You switch it on again.

Nothing.

You stare at it.

Nothing.

You switch it off and on again, because apparently electricity sometimes responds to intimidation.

Before assuming you’ve destroyed the entire electrical system, start with the simple things.

Was it working when you tested the lights before starting to build? If not, how do you know whether they ever worked?

Check:

– Is the battery connected?
– Is the switch in the correct position?
– Are the batteries installed correctly?
– Is the JST connector fully inserted?
– Have any wires been trapped, pinched or damaged?
– Do any lights work?
– If the kit has a touch-pad sensor, have you reset it by removing the batteries, reinserting them and switching the battery pack back on? Sometimes all it needs is a reset.

If one light works but another doesn’t, the problem is probably local to that circuit, connection or LED.

If nothing works, start at the power source and work forwards.

And please don’t immediately start cutting wires.

That is generally the book nook equivalent of fixing a watch with a hammer.

Also remember that “I think I know what I’m doing” is not an electrical testing procedure.

If you’re not sure what you’re looking at, stop and check the instructions or contact the manufacturer.

The miniature building can wait.

Your sanity is considerably harder to replace.


The Wiring Has Disappeared

You’ve connected everything.

You’ve tested it.

It works.

Excellent.

Now you have to hide the wires.

Suddenly those wonderfully discreet cables appear to be approximately the diameter of garden hoses.

You look at the instructions.

The finished photograph shows absolutely no wires.

You look at your build.

It appears to have been connected to the National Grid.

This is where planning ahead matters.

Before permanently attaching walls, floors and furniture, work out where the wires are going to run.

Use the spaces provided by the kit wherever possible, and avoid crushing cables between components.

A wire that is perfectly happy today may become considerably less happy when a piece of MDF is glued on top of it tomorrow.

And once it is trapped, you will discover that the wire is now the only part of the entire project that has achieved perfect structural integrity.


The Mysterious Gap

There is a gap.

You don’t remember putting a gap there.

The instructions don’t mention a gap.

The illustration doesn’t appear to have a gap.

And now you are convinced you’ve ruined everything.

Stop.

Some gaps are intentional.

Others are caused by tolerances between components, and some disappear once surrounding pieces are installed.

Before reaching for filler or glue, look at the next few steps.

That gap may be about to disappear completely.

This is why building directly from one instruction photograph to the next can sometimes be misleading.

Look ahead.

Your future self may be grateful.

Your present self, meanwhile, will probably spend fifteen minutes staring at the gap from different angles and wondering whether the manufacturer has personally singled you out.

They haven’t.

Probably.


The Leftover Piece

Ah yes.

The leftover piece.

Every builder knows it.

You’ve finished the section, cleaned the work area and congratulated yourself on a job well done.

Then you see it.

A tiny piece of MDF sitting beside you.

You pick it up.

You turn it over.

You consult the instructions.

Nothing.

You check the floor.

Nothing.

You check the parts list.

Still nothing.

Don’t panic.

Some kits genuinely contain spare pieces.

But before declaring it an official spare, check the parts list and go back through the instructions.

If you can’t identify it, put it somewhere safe.

Not in the bin.

Not on the floor.

And definitely not somewhere “I’ll remember where I put that.”

You won’t.

You will put it somewhere extremely sensible.

Then, six months later, you will find it while looking for something completely unrelated and immediately recognise it as the piece you spent an entire evening trying to identify.

You still won’t know where it came from.


When Something Doesn’t Look Like the Picture

This can be surprisingly difficult to diagnose.

Sometimes your build doesn’t match the illustration because you’ve made a mistake.

Sometimes the photography is misleading.

And sometimes the finished kit simply doesn’t look exactly like the promotional photograph.

Lighting, camera angles, decoration and even tiny differences in assembly can make a big difference.

If something looks wrong, compare the actual construction rather than trying to reproduce the photograph exactly.

Check the shape, position and orientation of the components.

The photograph is there to help you.

It isn’t a legally binding construction contract.

It is also worth remembering that promotional photographs have a habit of making everything look effortless.

The miniature chair is perfectly positioned.

The lighting is perfect.

Nothing is crooked.

There isn’t a blob of glue on the floor.

Nobody has lost a tiny chair leg.

And there certainly isn’t a builder sitting beside it saying words that would make the average grandmother reach for the smelling salts.

Real book nook building is slightly different.


When You Definitely Built It Wrong

Eventually, you will find one.

That moment when you look at the instructions and realise:

“Oh.”

You’ve installed something backwards.

Unfortunately, there is no technical term for this.

Most builders simply call it Tuesday.

You turn the instructions upside down.

You turn the piece upside down.

You turn the entire build around.

You turn yourself around.

Nothing helps.

Then you finally see it.

It is backwards.

You know it is backwards because you can clearly see that it should be the other way around.

Unfortunately, you can also see that it was glued approximately three hours ago.

If the mistake is recent and the adhesive hasn’t fully cured, you may be able to carefully remove the component.

If it has been glued firmly, don’t immediately start ripping the structure apart.

Consider whether the mistake will actually be visible once the build is finished.

Sometimes the best repair is leaving well enough alone.

Book nook building is not a competition to see who can achieve molecular-level perfection.

Unless, of course, you have already told everyone on Facebook how perfect your build is.

In which case, good luck, you’ll need it!

You may now spend the next three days photographing the build exclusively from one angle.


The Golden Rule: Stop When You’re Getting Angry

This may be the most important piece of troubleshooting advice of all.

If you’ve been trying to fit one tiny component for twenty minutes and your vocabulary has expanded considerably, walk away.

Have a coffee.

Go outside.

Talk to another human being.

Come back later.

Tiny pieces become considerably easier to work with when you’re not trying to insert them into something while simultaneously questioning every decision you’ve made since birth.

There is a point in every build where you stop being a craftsman and become a man having an argument with a piece of plywood.

Recognise that moment.

Put the tools down.

Because the next stage usually goes something like this:

You force the piece.

It breaks.

You say something inappropriate.

You discover the broken piece was actually supposed to go somewhere else.

You make another mistake trying to repair it.

Then you decide the manufacturer is responsible for all of this.

None of which would have happened if you’d simply gone and had that coffee.

And quite often, when you come back ten minutes later, the problem becomes obvious within seconds.

Annoyingly obvious.

The sort of obvious that makes you wonder why you didn’t see it before.

Because you were angry.

That’s why.


So… Is It Broken?

Before deciding that your kit has failed you, work through the basics:

Check the instructions.

Check the orientation.

Check the previous steps.

Test before gluing.

Check the wiring.

Don’t force anything.

And most importantly:

Don’t panic.

Book nook kits are miniature constructions, and sometimes tiny tolerances, delicate components and complicated instructions can make problems look much worse than they actually are.

Nine times out of ten, the problem has a solution.

And that tenth time?

Well…

That’s what customer service departments are for.

Because sometimes it really is the kit.

You weren’t wrong.

You weren’t imagining it.

And you definitely didn’t accidentally install the entire building upside down.

Probably.

And if you did?

Well, look on the bright side.

At least you’ve discovered it before adding the roof.
