Introduction:

There are some kits that arrive on the workbench with a little more baggage than a few sheets of MDF and a bag of LEDs, and the Plume Mountain Retreat from Aslowsnail is definitely one of them.

The kit arrives in a sturdy box wrapped in a full-colour, gloss-printed sleeve, giving it a rather polished first impression. But behind that attractive packaging is a design that has already prompted a mixed reaction online.

Much of the discussion centres on the imagery and the wider history it can evoke. For Native American peoples, the loss of ancestral lands was not simply a matter of moving house. Throughout the expansion of the United States, tribes were repeatedly forced from their traditional territories through government policy, broken treaties and military action, often being relocated to unfamiliar and less desirable land. The consequences of that history continue to be felt, so imagery suggesting Native Americans being displaced from their land can understandably be viewed very differently depending on the perspective of the viewer.

It appears that the kit itself may also have undergone something of a rebrand. An earlier version was showcased on social media under a different name, attracting plenty of comments and discussion. If memory serves me right, the original title was something along the lines of Indian Village, before it eventually emerged under its current name, Plume Mountain Retreat.

Whatever your view of the design and the history it touches upon, there is no denying that this is a kit that has already generated more conversation than most before a single piece has been removed from the box. So, with that in mind, I’m going to put the wider debate to one side for now, open the rather smart-looking packaging and see exactly what Aslowsnail has delivered.

Aslowsnail is part of the wider Sile Crafts Group catalogue, so this is another chance to see what comes from one of the increasingly familiar names in the book nook world. Time to get the glue out and see whether Plume Mountain Retreat can win me over on the workbench. having completed the build, here’s my scorecard for it.

Having initially given the lighting system a fairly easy ride for being simple and beginner-friendly, I am now going to have to completely revise my opinion of one particular aspect of this build.

I was contacted by a subscriber who was having difficulty removing the battery box from its compartment underneath the upper stairs. She couldn’t get it out and asked me how I had managed it. My first reaction was that I hadn’t actually tried. I had fitted the batteries during the initial testing of the lighting system, before I had built a single piece of the model, so there had never been any reason for me to remove the box once the build was complete. I had simply installed it exactly as the instructions told me to and carried on building, expecting that I would have to remove it at some point to change the batteries.

So, I opened the rear accordion door and tried to remove the battery box.

And that’s when the penny dropped.

It can’t be removed.

Not easily. Not with a bit of jiggling. Not with the traditional book-nook technique of holding your tongue at the correct angle and hoping for the best. It simply doesn’t have enough room to come out of its compartment.

The problem becomes obvious when you look at the arrangement. The battery box needs to move laterally towards the left before it can be angled sufficiently to line up with the rear access opening. Unfortunately, the wall of the staircase, part C01, prevents that movement. There simply isn’t enough clearance between C01 and the interior wall of the battery compartment to allow the box to pivot into the position required to remove it through the rear accordion door.

And before blaming the builder, I went back through the manual and checked everything. Then I checked it again. I went right back to the construction of the stairs and followed the instructions through to the installation of the battery box. Everything had been assembled correctly.

At that point, I did what any reasonably sensible book nook builder would do when faced with a problem that shouldn’t exist: I started taking the bloody thing apart.

Breaking down the relevant rear wall sections along with the roof of the build allowed me to see exactly what was happening, and the problem became very clear. The battery box compartment simply hasn’t been given sufficient lateral clearance. The box needs that extra bit of room to move sideways and then pivot so that it can line up with the rear opening. Part C01 effectively blocks that movement.

Which leaves us with a rather serious problem.

The batteries are replaceable in theory, because you can open the battery box. They just aren’t replaceable once the model has been built as instructed, because you can’t get the battery box out.

And that, I’m afraid, is not something I can overlook in a review.

A battery box that cannot be removed is rather like fitting the batteries into a safe, closing the door and then discovering you forgot to leave yourself the combination. The lights might work perfectly well, but eventually those batteries are going to need replacing — and at that point, you’re going to have a problem.

I originally gave the lighting 8/10, but in light of the battery-box issue, I have had to revise this score considerably.

At present, the only practical solution I can see is not to install the battery box beneath the stairs as instructed. Instead, the battery box and its wiring would have to be fed out through the rear accordion access door and left sitting behind the completed kit. While this does provide access to the batteries, it is hardly an ideal solution and certainly not one that should be necessary on a properly designed kit. It also means the battery box and cables are left outside the model, which detracts from the finished appearance and effectively defeats the purpose of having an integrated lighting system.

The supplied bead-head LEDs are adequate, but they could certainly have been brighter, particularly when it comes to illuminating the upper room. Once the model is assembled, that area is noticeably darker than I would have liked.

There is also a missed opportunity with the campfire. A flickering LED would have added considerably more atmosphere and would have been a relatively simple addition to the lighting system. In fact, I may well return to this kit when I have a little more time and modify the campfire myself.

However, the biggest problem isn’t brightness — it’s accessibility. A lighting system is only as practical as its power supply, and discovering that the battery box cannot actually be removed once the model is built is a major flaw. That is why this score has had to come down from my original 8/10.

One slightly curious point worth mentioning is that I bought my kit directly from Aslowsnail via AliExpress, but it appears to be getting around under more than one name. While mine is Plume Mountain Retreat, I have also seen the identical kit promoted on Facebook by Fifijoy as Feather Ridge Lodge. So, if you happen to come across it while shopping and wonder whether you’ve discovered another completely different cabin kit, don’t be too quick to reach for your wallet — you may simply have found Plume Mountain Retreat wearing a different name badge.

The kit itself is an open-format diorama centred around a wooden cabin, with a variety of accessories helping to build up the scene. There is an animal skull, cactus plants, blankets and plenty of other smaller details to add character and atmosphere. This isn’t a traditional enclosed book nook, so there are no side walls, roof or front panel, and consequently no dust cover. Instead, it is designed as a freestanding display piece, with the finished scene fully open and visible from the front.

There is no official piece count provided for the kit, but the finished Plume Mountain Retreat measures 18.5cm wide by 18.5cm deep and 17.6cm high. That makes this an almost perfectly square build, with a reasonably compact footprint that should still give the finished diorama plenty of presence on display.

I picked up my kit from AliExpress as an original Sile Crafts Group kit for £39.39, with free shipping, but where it was also listed under a different title of Hanamiya Indian Christa Book Nook at a more expensive price point. That is another small twist in the story of this kit, particularly given the apparent name change from the version previously showcased on social media.

The manufacturer recommends this kit for builders aged 14 and over. It sits comfortably within what I would normally consider the beginner category, although interestingly, the manufacturer does not provide a star rating indicating the level of difficulty.

However, having uncovered the battery-box accessibility problem during my review, I have to take a different view of recommending it.

While the actual construction is relatively straightforward, the fact that the battery box cannot be removed once the model is assembled is a significant issue that should not be overlooked. Anyone buying the kit needs to know that changing the batteries after completion is, in its supplied configuration, effectively impossible.

For that reason, I cannot currently recommend this kit in its present form. Until the battery-box access problem is addressed by the manufacturer, I would advise potential builders to approach this kit with caution. The finished model is undoubtedly attractive, but a kit intended to be illuminated should not leave the builder unable to access its power supply.


Unboxing:

The unboxing images. Always the fun part of a new build.

Opening the box reveals what you get for your £39.39, and there is a decent collection of materials waiting to be turned into the finished diorama. The main construction is supplied on seven full-size and two half-size panels of 2.5mm MDF, with the boards neatly packed to protect the laser-cut pieces.

Also included are the instruction manual and a sticker sheet, and I am pleased to report that, for once, there isn’t a pile of miniature books to cut out, fold and glue together. Instead, this kit comes with a few rather more appropriate extras for the scene, including fabric, some rope, a pair of tweezers and a sanding stick.

Alongside the MDF and accessories is the lighting kit, which I’ll take a much closer look at later in the review. At this stage, though, there is already plenty here to suggest that the relatively simple-looking cabin will involve more than just slotting a few wooden walls together. With the various structural pieces, decorative accessories and soft furnishings all waiting in the box, there is a fair amount to squeeze into what is, after all, a fairly compact square build.


Instruction Manual:

I have to admit it, but this is a manual that just ‘gets it right’. Easy to follow, logical and well explained at each step.

The instruction manual is an A4, full-colour affair running to 22 pages and, on first inspection, it certainly gives a good impression. The stages are laid out in a logical order, the illustrations are clear and, for the most part, each step follows naturally from the one before it. So far, so good.

One feature that particularly impressed me was the lighting section. The LEDs are colour coded in the manual, something I have been asking manufacturers to do for quite some time. Anyone who has read my reviews will know that I regularly reach for my own markers to colour-code wires and LEDs before installation, so seeing this already incorporated into the instructions was a welcome change. My markers could stay in the drawer for this one.

And, to be fair, the instructions themselves remained one of the stronger aspects of the build. The problem I subsequently discovered wasn’t that the manual failed to tell me how to build the model — I followed the relevant stages correctly. The problem was that the instructions tell you where and how to install the battery box without making it clear that, once the surrounding structure is completed, the battery box cannot actually be removed to replace the batteries.

That is a fairly significant omission.

Having subsequently dismantled part of the build to investigate the problem, I went back through the instructions from the staircase construction through to the battery-box installation and confirmed that I had followed them correctly. There is no indication that the box needs to be installed in some alternative position, nor any warning that access will subsequently be restricted by part C01.

So while I am still happy with the clarity, presentation and logical progression of the manual, I can no longer give it the completely glowing assessment I might have given it at the beginning of the build. The instructions explain how to construct the model, but they fail to identify a significant design consequence of following those instructions.

In other words, the manual didn’t need a crystal ball — it needed to tell me what would happen when I eventually needed to change the batteries.


The Kit as Supplied:

It’s not an extensive kit in terms of boards. For accessories it’s really some material, rope, stickers and that’s about your lot!

First impressions count, particularly when you’ve just handed over £39.39 and are hoping you haven’t bought nine sheets of MDF and a future headache.

Thankfully, Plume Mountain Retreat gets off to a pretty good start. There are seven full-size and two half-size panels, all cut from 2.5mm MDF, with a semi-gloss lustre finish. The laser cutting looks very clean at first glance, with clearly defined pieces and little obvious scorching around the edges. At this stage, I was thinking this could be a rather nice little build.

The printed detail is also immediately impressive. There is a good mixture of colours and textures, with some of the printing having an almost 3D appearance. The very first piece to come off the board, the rustic tabletop/tree section marked F04, is a perfect example. The printed texture gives what is essentially a flat piece of MDF a surprising amount of depth and character. Even some of the smallest components, such as the little totem poles, have remarkably sharp and clear printing.

There is plenty of variety in the box too. Alongside the MDF there is fabric and rope, while the finished scene includes cactus plants, blankets, an animal skull and a whole collection of smaller decorative pieces. There is also a sticker sheet for some of the finishing touches. So this certainly isn’t one of those builds where absolutely everything is made from wood and your finished scene looks like it was designed by a particularly enthusiastic carpenter.

The lighting also looked reassuringly straightforward, with the colour-coded LEDs in the manual earning immediate brownie points from me. Anything that allows me to leave my collection of markers in the drawer for a while is doing something right.

So, at this point in the build, first impressions were very positive. The materials looked good, the printing was excellent and there was plenty of detail to keep me interested. What I couldn’t see at this stage was the problem that would eventually change my view of the kit quite considerably.

It was only after the build was completed, when a subscriber contacted me about removing the battery box, that the rather more serious issue came to light. I had fitted and tested the batteries before construction began, so I had never had reason to try removing the box once the surrounding structure was in place. When I finally did, I discovered that it simply cannot be removed through the rear access opening because there isn’t sufficient clearance around part C01.

That discovery doesn’t alter the fact that the kit makes a very good first impression. The materials and printing really are good. But it does serve as a useful reminder that a kit can look excellent on the bench and still hide a fairly fundamental problem that only becomes apparent once the build is complete.

And, unfortunately for Plume Mountain Retreat, that’s exactly what happened here.


Lighting Kit:

The supplied lighting kit is fairly basic, but it does the job, just take care when fitting the battery box into the build.

The lighting system supplied with Plume Mountain Retreat initially looked like one of the more beginner-friendly aspects of the kit. Power comes from a standard two-AAA battery box and the system itself is refreshingly uncomplicated. There is no PCB to contend with, no collection of tiny sockets and no spaghetti junction of cables waiting to test your patience.

The three lamps connect directly to the battery box using JST plugs, with the touch panel providing the on/off control. There is no master switch on the battery box, so once the batteries are installed, the touch panel becomes your means of controlling the lighting.

On paper, this is exactly the sort of lighting system I would expect to see in a kit aimed at beginners. It is simple, straightforward and doesn’t require you to develop a degree in electrical engineering before you can get the lights working.

Unfortunately, there is a rather important sting in the tail which I only discovered after completing the build.

The battery box is installed beneath the upper staircase, and once the surrounding structure is assembled, it cannot actually be removed. I initially missed this because I had installed batteries and tested the system before I had built the model around it. It was only after a subscriber contacted me with exactly the same problem that I went back and investigated.

Having checked the manual and then dismantled part of the build to establish exactly what was happening, it became clear that there simply isn’t enough lateral clearance around part C01 to allow the battery box to be moved, angled and withdrawn through the rear access opening.

That rather changes my view of the lighting system.

The actual wiring is simple enough, and I still think beginners will appreciate the lack of complicated electronics. But simplicity is of little consolation if you can’t get the battery box back out when the batteries eventually need replacing.

There is also a missed opportunity with the lighting itself. The supplied bead-head LEDs do the job, but I found them a little underpowered, particularly when it comes to illuminating the upper room. A flickering LED for the campfire would also have added a nice bit of atmosphere. I may well return to this kit at some point and make that modification myself.

So, while the lighting system looked like one of the easier parts of the build when I started, the battery-box problem means I can no longer give it the score I originally intended. The wiring may be beginner-friendly, but the engineering behind the battery access most certainly isn’t.


The Build:

The start of this build, like so many others, sees you building lots of ‘bits’ before you get near a floor or wall panel.

Before we even get to put up a single wall of the cabin, there is a fair bit of preparation to get through. The opening stages have you building tables, shelving and a whole assortment of decorative ornaments first, so by the time the main structure finally makes its appearance on page 10, you’ll already have a small pile of furniture sitting on the workbench waiting patiently for somebody to build it a house.

From there, things move along in a nice, sensible order. The ground floor goes together first, followed by the interior, before the left and right walls start to close everything in. Then comes the wiring for the lights, which is exactly where you want it. There is nothing worse than admiring your newly built cabin, glue barely dry, only to spot a couple of wires still sitting on the workbench and realise you were supposed to put them inside. Trust me, trying to thread cables through a tiny gap with tweezers after everything has been glued together is not the sort of additional challenge I like to see included in a kit.

With the electrics safely tucked away, attention then turns to the rear of the cabin, followed by the roof and its shingles. After that, it’s time to start making the place look lived in, and there is certainly no shortage of bits to add. Cactus plants, blankets, an animal skull and a healthy collection of other exterior decorations gradually transform what started as a fairly ordinary wooden cabin into a rather more eye-catching little retreat.

Now, there are quite a lot of components in this one, and the pile on the workbench can look slightly intimidating if you’ve just graduated from the sort of kit that contains four walls, a chair and three miniature books. But don’t let that put you off. The build itself appears to be very straightforward, with the manual taking you through things in a logical order, making this a good next step for a beginner who wants to move on from the very basic kits without immediately finding themselves in need of counselling.

And once it is all finished, I think this one could have plenty of shelf appeal. It is an unusual open-format diorama, and with all that decoration surrounding the cabin, there should be enough going on to make people stop and have a closer look. Whether they approve of the design is, of course, another matter entirely, but I very much doubt Plume Mountain Retreat will disappear quietly into the background beside a row of more traditional book nooks, and certainly not while issues remain unresolved.


The First Section:

There is, if you are like me at colouring edges, a good couple of hours in this task alone.

So, as we wind our way through the manual and finally kick-start the build, pages six and seven have us making an assortment of interior furniture, along with cups, bowls, jewellery, carved totem poles and assorted figurine heads. In other words, before we’ve built so much as a wall, we’ve already got a small collection of household goods sitting on the workbench wondering when somebody is going to provide them with somewhere to live.

Now, if you are one of those sensible people who pops the pieces out, gives them a quick look and gets on with gluing them together, there’s probably an hour’s work here. If you’re me, however, things are rather different. Every piece gets sanded. Every piece then gets coloured. And before that can happen, I have to choose the colour.

That sounds simple enough until you have more than 250 pens sitting in front of you. You would imagine having that many colours would make life easier. It doesn’t. Ten minutes later, I’m still staring at various shades of brown trying to decide whether Brown 47 is more suitable than Brown 83, despite the fact that, to anyone over the age of about three feet away, they probably look exactly the same. So, my one-hour job has now become a minimum two-hour job. As usual.

But I have to say, the printing is making the extra effort worthwhile. I was impressed when I removed the first piece from the board, and that hasn’t changed as we’ve moved on to these much smaller components. The detail on the tiny totem poles, for example, is exceptionally sharp and clear, with none of the fuzzy, slightly blurred printing that can ruin an otherwise nicely detailed piece. (see gallery at end of this review).

It is actually quite remarkable how much definition has been retained on parts this small. Plenty of manufacturers would love to achieve printing of this quality, and quite a few have clearly tried. Aslowsnail, however, appears to have got there. So, while I may still be sitting here debating the merits of one brown pen over another, at least I’ve got some very nicely printed pieces to colour.


First Tip of the Day:

For ease and convenience, I’m suggesting you do not follow the manual for this element of the build.

And here’s your first tip of the day, brought to you courtesy of page eight and step nine.

This is where you build the little outdoor tent using four wooden parts and the supplied hemp material. The manual tells you to glue parts C32 and J12 together first, then attach the hemp to the outside of the tent. Perfectly straightforward in theory. The problem is that this hemp frays faster than my patience when I’ve dropped a tiny part on the floor.

Try cutting it first and you’ll soon have little strands appearing everywhere, with half of them seemingly determined to make a break for freedom.

My suggestion is to do things in a slightly different order. Apply some PVA glue to the outer facing of the tent side walls C32 and then place the whole thing directly onto the hemp material. Now walk away and leave it alone until the glue has dried properly. Don’t be tempted to start trimming it after five minutes because you want to get on with the next step. Give it time.

Once it is properly dry, take a sharp craft knife or a pair of very fine scissors and trim away the excess hemp. Because the material is now securely glued in place, you have a nice solid wooden edge to work against, making it much easier to get a clean, straight cut without the hemp deciding this is the perfect opportunity to start shedding strands all over your workbench.


Tip Number Two:

Step 10 on page eight brings us to what can only be described, in the finest Scots vernacular, as a proper footery bit.

You’ll be cutting the supplied rope into 3.5cm lengths before threading them through the tiny hole in feather piece J04. Sounds easy enough, doesn’t it? Well, no. The problem is that once you cut the rope, the ends immediately start fraying, turning the simple task of getting it through the hole into something resembling trying to pass a camel through the eye of a needle.

Now, all things going well, you would simply thread the rope through and move on. I can reveal now that all things did not go well.

My first bright idea was to burn the end of the rope to stop it fraying. A perfectly reasonable solution, I thought. Unfortunately, this particular rope went up like a dynamite ignition cord, so that was one length of rope rapidly removed from the equation. Fortunately, there was a spare.

Plan B involved a dab of glue to stiffen the end and make it easier to thread through the hole. Excellent idea in theory. In practice, I somehow managed to glue my fingers to the feather. Strike two.

By this stage, with my options rapidly disappearing, I reached for the UV resin. A tiny amount on the end of the rope, cured under the UV light, gave me the firm point I had been looking for in the first place. And finally, after far more effort than should ever be required to get a 3.5cm piece of rope through a tiny hole, we got there.

My God, though, what a slog.

And for anyone wondering what exactly I mean by footery, it’s a Scots word used to describe something awkward, fiddly and time-wasting — usually a small, frustrating job that takes far more clumsy effort to complete than it has any right to. In other words, Step 10.


Tip number three:

Remember C33 and 34 are not identical pieces and they fit into their own template.

A quick word of warning before you get to Step 17 on page 10. This is where you build the little set of stairs and add pieces C33 and C34, two North American Indian masks, to the side.

At first glance, they look identical. In fact, I spent a fair bit of time looking at them and wondering why they had bothered giving them two different part numbers. Look a little closer, however, and there is a tiny difference in the length of the headdress.

It is not much, but it is enough to matter when you come to position them because the kit helpfully has stencilled the location. So before reaching for the glue, check which is which and make sure each mask goes in the correct position on the stairs. Get them mixed up and they may still look perfectly fine, but there is nothing quite like discovering a tiny difference after the glue has dried and realising the manufacturer had a reason for giving you two part numbers after all.

The stairs themselves went together without any problems, but this was the point where I was about to open up a right can of worms without having the slightest idea what was coming further down the line. At this stage, everything fitted as it should and there was nothing to suggest there was a problem lurking beneath the upper stairs.

It was only later, when I was asked about removing the battery box, that this particular area of the build would come back to haunt me.


Tip Number four:

Be very, and I mean very careful with this part. The tenon is under a lot of strain inserting this correctly.

Once you hit page 12, you’re finally getting on a bit of a roll as more of the actual cabin starts to come together. And suddenly, one of those earlier mystery components reveals what on earth it was supposed to be doing.

Jumping back to Step 14, you’ll have made a twin-circle item which, at the time, I had absolutely no idea where it was going to fit. It was one of those pieces you dutifully build because the manual tells you to, then place carefully to one side and hope its purpose becomes clear before the end of the build. Fast forward a few pages and here we are.

It fits onto the underside of piece E07, which looks remarkably like a floor. This is the point where I would urge a little caution. The whole assembly is held together by a single stem and the very thin section C27, so if you’re even remotely ham-fisted — and I include myself in that category when the occasion demands it — don’t be tempted to force it into place. Push too hard and I suspect something is going to snap.

In my case, the tenon was ever so slightly too tight for the mortise in the floor section. Rather than forcing the issue, I gave the tenon the lightest of sands and tried again. It then popped neatly into place without even needing glue, which I had fully expected to use.

So, a little bit of sanding, a gentle push and job done. Start leaning on it like you’re trying to close an overstuffed suitcase, however, and you may find yourself reaching for the glue for an entirely different reason.

You have been warned.


Lighting tip:

With the battery box in this configuration, you may struggle to fit the back wall. Turn it around with the JST plugs facing inward and the problem disappears.

Another little tip when you come to install the lighting kit, although in hindsight this is rather more than just a tip.

When installing the battery box, pay particular attention to the position of the JST connectors and the cables attached to them. Make sure the cables have sufficient slack and, more importantly, that they don’t foul the interior wall section when you come to install it. I found that positioning the cables carefully made fitting the final wall section E01 considerably easier.

However, there is a much more important issue here that I only discovered after the build was completed.

The battery box is located beneath the upper stairs, with access intended to be through the rear accordion-style opening. That sounds perfectly reasonable until you actually try to remove the box once the model has been built.

It won’t come out.

I discovered this only after a subscriber contacted me because she was unable to remove hers. I had never encountered the problem during my original build because I had fitted the batteries and tested the lighting before constructing the surrounding sections. I therefore had no reason to remove the battery box once everything was in place.

Having now investigated it properly, including going back through the manual and dismantling part of the build, the reason is clear. There simply isn’t enough lateral clearance within the battery compartment to allow the box to be moved sufficiently to the side, angled and passed through the rear access opening. The interior wall created by part C01 prevents the necessary movement.

I checked the construction carefully and confirmed that I had followed the instructions correctly. There isn’t a missed step or some clever technique that I had overlooked. The problem is simply that the completed structure doesn’t leave enough room to remove the battery box.

So, while the cable positioning is something you can easily deal with during construction, the battery-box accessibility is a genuine design problem. And it’s one you really need to know about before you build this section, because once the model is complete, changing the batteries becomes a rather significant problem.

In fact, calling it a battery compartment may be giving it rather too much credit. At that stage, it’s more of a battery storage facility with a very strict no-removal policy.


Customisation:

Now, this is where things started to get interesting. The kit comes with a surprisingly large collection of accessories, although most are flat 2D pieces. There is pottery, masks, birds, rabbits, baskets, oil lamps and cacti, while the feathers and leaves come on self-adhesive sheets. The same applies to the stair carpets, animal-skin rugs, and tablecovers.

And you really do need to add them. Looking at the build before all these little extras go on, it is a bit like arriving at a party before anyone else has turned up. Perfectly respectable, but not exactly bursting with life. Once everything is added, though, the whole scene changes.

Of course, being me, was I going to simply stick with what Aslowsnail supplied? Not a chance. The two kit trees were replaced with more realistic 3D versions, while the supplied flat rocks were swapped for proper ones. I also added a broken tree trunk and some flowering shrubs to give the outside area a bit more depth and colour.

Then I looked underneath the stairs and decided that was looking rather empty too. So in went a box and barrel, both coloured to give them a little more definition.

All the wooden edges were sanded to remove any burrs before being coloured. No build-time estimate is supplied with the kit, but by the time I had finished colouring all my edges, adding my own touches and generally tinkering with things that probably didn’t need tinkering with, I had clocked up around 14 hours over four days.


Special Note:

For beginners into this hobby, a good manual can make or break a first build.

One of the things I really appreciated about this build was the manual. And believe me, after some of the absolute shockers I’ve wrestled with over the past few months, that is not something I say lightly.

For the most part, this one actually tells you what you need to know. Revolutionary stuff, I know. If a piece has to be fitted in a particular orientation, it tells you. If there is a specific order in which something needs to be done, such as installing the roof tiles, you’re given a warning before merrily gluing something into place and discovering three steps later that you’ve created a problem for yourself.

Those might sound like small details, but they make a huge difference to the building experience. There is nothing more frustrating than sitting staring at a diagram, turning a piece in your hand in every conceivable direction and wondering, “What on earth do they want me to do with this?”

I’ve encountered plenty of manuals that seem to adopt the philosophy of, “Here are the bits. Good luck.” Thankfully, this isn’t one of them.

There is, however, one fairly significant qualification to my praise. While the manual is clear about how the various components should be assembled, it doesn’t flag the battery-box problem. I followed the instructions correctly, including the installation of the battery box, but once the surrounding structure is completed there isn’t sufficient clearance to remove it through the rear access opening.

That’s an important distinction. The manual itself is clear and logical, but it doesn’t warn you about a consequence of the installation that becomes rather important once the model is finished.

I will be contacting Aslowsnail to highlight this problem, because while the kit is reasonably new, this is something that really should have been picked up much earlier in the design and testing stages. A simple test of whether the battery box could actually be removed after the surrounding structure had been completed would have exposed the problem long before the kit reached builders.

Even so, compared with some of the manuals I’ve encountered, particularly with kits bought directly as imports, this one is still considerably better. A good manual can make or break the whole building experience, and this one does a good job of guiding you through the construction without turning you into a miniature detective every few pages.

So, despite the battery-box omission, Aslowsnail deserves credit for producing a manual that is clear, well illustrated and generally easy to follow. For beginners in particular, that makes a considerable difference — and that’s exactly what a good instruction manual should do.


My Thoughts:

I have to admit that my view of this build has changed quite considerably since I first put the final piece in place.

For the most part, I really did enjoy building Plume Mountain Retreat. There is plenty to keep you occupied, the printed detail is excellent and watching the cabin gradually take shape is genuinely satisfying. There is also enough going on in the finished scene to keep you looking around and spotting details you probably missed the first time.

The manual deserves credit too. It is clear, logical and considerably better than many I’ve encountered. Even beginners should find it relatively easy to follow, and that makes a huge difference to the overall building experience.

There is also plenty of scope for customisation, which is something I always enjoy. The kit provides a good foundation, but there are numerous opportunities to add your own touches. As usual, I found myself thinking about what else could be added, and the flat accessories in particular left me wondering what some carefully chosen 3D replacements might look like. A few more three-dimensional birds, animals or other wildlife would certainly add another layer of depth.

But then came the battery-box discovery.

Having a power supply that cannot be removed once the model is completed is not a minor niggle that can simply be brushed aside. It is a fundamental design problem, particularly when the model is intended to be illuminated and the batteries will inevitably need replacing at some point.

That has forced me to reconsider my original assessment of the kit. The build itself was enjoyable, the instructions are good and the finished model has plenty of shelf appeal, but those positives cannot completely overcome an engineering problem that should have been identified during the design and testing process.

I will be contacting Aslowsnail to make them aware of the problem, because this is exactly the sort of issue that should be picked up before a kit reaches the market. Whether they can offer a practical solution remains to be seen.

So, would I recommend Plume Mountain Retreat?

At this moment, and in its current form, no. That isn’t a conclusion I particularly wanted to reach after what was otherwise a thoroughly enjoyable 14-hour build, but I think it would be wrong to recommend a kit while knowing that its battery box cannot be removed once construction is complete.

There is a lot to like here. The printing is excellent, the manual is good, the build is enjoyable and the finished diorama is certainly different. But ultimately, a good-looking model still needs to work properly.

And unfortunately, Plume Mountain Retreat has left me with the rather unfortunate conclusion that the batteries go in a compartment with an exit strategy that the manufacturer appears to have forgotten to include.



Pros

  • Excellent printed detail, with some pieces having an almost 3D appearance.
  • Very good quality and clarity even on some of the smallest components.
  • Clean laser cutting and a good variety of materials.
  • Clear, logical and well-illustrated instruction manual.
  • Colour-coded lighting connections make the wiring straightforward.
  • Plenty of detail in the finished scene.
  • Good scope for customisation and adding your own touches.

Cons

  • The battery box cannot be removed once the model is fully assembled, making battery replacement impossible without dismantling part of the build.
  • The battery-box access problem should have been identified during the design and testing stages.
  • The supplied bead-head LEDs could be brighter, particularly in the upper room.
  • No flickering LED is provided for the campfire.
  • Some accessories are flat rather than three-dimensional, although this does provide an opportunity for the builder to customise the scene.
  • Because of the battery-box problem, I cannot recommend the kit in its current form.

Battery Box Issues:

I need to highlight a significant design problem I discovered after completing the build. The battery box is located beneath the upper stairs and is intended to be accessible through the rear opening. However, once the surrounding structure has been assembled, there is insufficient clearance to move and angle the box sufficiently to remove it.

I initially missed this because I had fitted the batteries and tested the lighting before building the surrounding sections. It was only after a subscriber contacted me with the same problem that I tried to remove the box from the completed model. Having checked the manual and subsequently dismantled part of the build to investigate, I confirmed that the instructions had been followed correctly and that the problem is with the design of the compartment itself.

I have covered this issue in the relevant sections of the review, including the build, lighting, instructions and final assessment, because it has a direct bearing on several aspects of the kit.
