The Build
Construction begins with the first floor, which features display cases and a plateau diorama containing dinosaurs and a T-Rex skeleton. The second and third levels continue the museum theme, with additional display cases and framed artwork.
A significant number of the display cases use acrylic pieces to create their covers and enclosures. Once the three interior levels are complete, the exterior walls are assembled, primarily involving the gluing of frames and installation of additional display cases.
The MDF pieces are cleanly laser cut and easy to remove from their boards. The printed surfaces are clear and the overall component quality was rated 9/10 by D.J.
Instructions
The instructions are presented in full colour and were generally very easy to follow. D.J. rated them 9/10.
There was one confusing issue during the build where two very different pieces were assigned the same part number. This did not develop into a significant problem, but it is worth noting.
Lighting
The kit includes an integrated lighting system covering the different floors and ceiling area, including an acrylic chandelier.
The LEDs are installed into designated channels and secured using T-brackets, with the wiring routed through the model and connected together. Additional lights and a touch-control panel are installed towards the end of the build.
D.J. rated the lighting 8/10.
The acrylic components, particularly those used externally and for the chandelier, require careful handling when being removed from their sheets and when the protective film is removed.
Final Assembly
The final stages involve installing the rear wall, enclosing the battery compartment and completing the roof structure.
This is where the precision of the earlier construction becomes particularly important. The kit has very little tolerance and is a tight build. Any misalignment of the walls or interior sections becomes apparent when installing the rear panel.
Despite this, D.J. experienced no significant problems during the build, and rated the piece fit and accuracy 8/10.
Finished Model
The finished Fossil Museum is an impressive project with plenty to explore.
Windows on both side walls provide views into the different floors, adding considerably to the finished display. However, there is an important drawback: the kit does not include a dust cover and the side windows are open. This means the model is likely to collect dust over time.
Fortunately, the open design should make cleaning relatively straightforward, with a blower being useful for removing dust from the interior.
Difficulty
Although the manufacturer rates this kit at 5/5 difficulty, D.J.’s experience was considerably different.
He rated the actual build difficulty at just 4/10 and considers the kit suitable for an Advanced Beginner.
There was nothing particularly challenging about the construction and the kit went together with very few issues.
With a build time of approximately 7.5 hours, this is a relatively manageable project for someone who has already completed a few Book Nook or miniature builds.
Packaging
