A Refreshing Change from Libraries and Magic

If you’ve built several book nooks recently, you’ll know that many manufacturers continue to focus on libraries, wizarding worlds and cosy bookstores. The Motusform Western Town is something rather different.

Instead of another magical street or reading room, this kit transports you to a bustling Old West town complete with saloons, wooden storefronts and classic frontier styling. It’s a refreshing theme that immediately stands out on the bookshelf and offers something a little different for collectors.

First Impressions

The kit is constructed almost entirely from printed MDF, with only a handful of accessories including:

  • Five small stickers
  • One decorative bell
  • Black wire detailing

The quality of the printed MDF is excellent throughout. Colours are vibrant, weathering effects look authentic, and the laser cutting remains neatly inside the printed artwork.

Although some of the shop signage is difficult to read without magnification, the overall finish is impressive and creates a convincing Wild West atmosphere.

Build Quality

One of the standout features of this kit is just how solid it feels.

The majority of the joints fit extremely tightly. Some builders may choose to lightly sand the tabs before assembly, but I actually appreciated the snug fit because it creates an exceptionally sturdy finished model.

During my build I experienced only one chipped component, which was easily repaired with a small amount of glue.

Once completed, this is one of the strongest and most rigid book nooks I have built.

Build Quality Rating: ★★★★★

Instructions

The instructions are printed in full colour and are generally straightforward to follow.

However, there is one area that could certainly be improved.

Some of the assembly illustrations are simply too small, making it difficult to determine the correct orientation of certain pieces. I accidentally installed several components backwards before later assembly stages made the correct positioning obvious.

Larger diagrams would have eliminated this issue entirely.

Fortunately, the overall construction process remains logical and easy to follow.

Instruction Rating: ★★★★☆

Lighting System

The lighting system is one of the more interesting aspects of the kit.

Included are six LEDs of varying colours and wire lengths.

At first glance this seems confusing because the lights aren’t colour coded. Fortunately, the instructions explain which light to use by referring to the remaining wire lengths (for example, “use the second longest remaining LED”), which works surprisingly well.

The wiring itself is generous, although I found the instructions slightly misleading when suggesting how much cable should be left available while temporarily parking components.

I eventually needed to adjust the amount of wire allocated to the touch sensor so it would comfortably reconnect to the battery compartment later in the build.

The excess wiring is cleverly hidden beneath the floor between internal panels, meaning no wires are visible in the completed model, something many manufacturers still struggle to achieve.

Lighting Rating: ★★★★★

Building Experience

One of the strengths of the Motusform Western Town is that it avoids unexpected complications.

There are:

  • No complicated mechanisms
  • No moving parts
  • No awkward structural surprises
  • No frustrating hidden assembly tricks

Instead, the project progresses steadily from start to finish, making it an enjoyable and relaxing build.

The entire kit took me approximately eight hours to complete, placing it firmly in the medium difficulty category.

Builders with a little previous experience should have no trouble completing it over a weekend.

Finished Appearance

Once illuminated, the Western Town really comes to life.

The warm lighting gives the wooden buildings a welcoming glow while the detailed printed textures create convincing depth despite the relatively simple construction.

The completed model feels substantial and robust, making it ideal for display either as a standalone miniature or alongside other themed book nooks.

If your collection currently consists mainly of libraries and fantasy scenes, this kit adds some welcome variety.

Pros

✔ Refreshing Wild West theme

✔ Excellent printed MDF quality

✔ Extremely sturdy finished model

✔ Well-hidden wiring

✔ Attractive warm lighting effects

✔ Straightforward and enjoyable build

✔ Good value for intermediate builders

Cons

✘ Some instruction diagrams are too small

✘ A few shop signs are difficult to read

✘ Very tight joints may require light sanding for some builders

Final Verdict

The Motusform Western Town proves that book nooks don’t always need to revolve around libraries or fantasy worlds to be successful.

Its sturdy construction, excellent print quality and cleverly concealed lighting make it an enjoyable project from start to finish. While the instruction diagrams could certainly be enlarged and some signage could be sharper, these are relatively minor criticisms in what is otherwise a very satisfying build.

If you’re looking to add something different to your collection—or you’re a fan of Western films and frontier towns—this is an easy recommendation.

Who Should Buy This Kit?

The Motusform Western Town is ideal for:

  • Collectors wanting a theme beyond libraries and fantasy.
  • Fans of Western films, frontier towns and Americana.
  • Intermediate builders looking for a relaxing weekend project.
  • Anyone wanting a robust book nook that feels exceptionally solid once completed.

With its unique setting, attractive lighting and excellent construction quality, the Western Town earns its place as one of the more distinctive additions to any book nook collection.
