The TOYQI Astronomical Observatory is one of the company’s newest releases and immediately stands apart from traditional book nook kits. Rather than fitting neatly into either the “book nook” or “miniature house” category, this design sits comfortably between the two. With its open architecture, domed observatory roof and decorative astronomical theme, it feels more like a display miniature than a hidden bookshelf insert.
Purchased via Amazon UK, this build continues TOYQI’s reputation for high quality printed materials, clean engineering and beginner-friendly assembly.
Build Quality and Materials

The kit is primarily constructed from printed MDF with sections of printed acrylic and only a very small number of stickers. As expected from TOYQI, the print quality throughout the build is excellent. Colors are sharp, textures are convincing and the faux copper detailing on the arches and railings includes subtle patina effects that give the observatory an aged appearance.
One of the biggest strengths of this kit is how cleanly the components are manufactured. Every wooden piece detached easily from the boards without splintering, and there was no need for sanding during the entire build. Simple marker touch-ups on the break points were enough to maintain the seamless finish.
The acrylic ceilings are particularly striking. Both the first floor ceiling and the observatory dome feature stylized astronomical artwork that reinforces the celestial theme. The dome ceiling displays beautifully once illuminated, although the first floor ceiling is less visible due to limited backlighting.
Construction Experience

Assembly is mostly straightforward tab-and-slot construction with very limited glue usage. Only a few arches required adhesive during the main structure build.
The fit quality was excellent overall. Tabs aligned properly and the structure remained stable throughout assembly. The only adjustment needed was gluing the first floor chairs into position because their tab slots were slightly oversized.
The stained glass windows are another attractive design choice. These are glued into arched frames and add color to the build, though the illumination through them is more subdued than expected once the model is completed.
The observatory dome itself was surprisingly easy to construct. Two cross beams create the main support structure before four upright supports are installed. The dome panels then slide neatly into position using a four-tab system before being locked together with the top cap. It is one of the more satisfying dome assemblies currently available in the book nook hobby.
Areas That Could Be Improved

While visually impressive, the second floor furnishings are the weakest part of the kit. The statues, globe, telescope, plants and scroll pedestal are all flat 2D pieces rather than fully dimensional components.
Given the generous interior space, this feels like a missed opportunity. Replacing those decorative elements with 3D accessories would dramatically increase the realism and premium feel of the finished observatory.
The lighting system is functional but slightly awkward due to the compact height of the model. The prewired three-LED setup includes more cable length than necessary, resulting in excess wiring that can become difficult to conceal neatly. During the build, reopening the second floor to reposition wiring was necessary because the floor and ceiling openings do not align perfectly.
It is possible this issue was partially caused by installing the first floor acrylic ceiling in reverse orientation, as the instructions do not specify which side should face upward.
Difficulty and Build Time
This is a very approachable project for newer builders. The construction process is uncomplicated, the instructions are clear and the fit quality minimizes frustration.
Builders looking for a relaxing weekend project without complicated wiring or fragile detailing will likely enjoy this kit.
Final Verdict
The TOYQI Astronomical Observatory succeeds because of its uniqueness. It avoids many of the overcrowded design trends currently dominating the book nook market and instead delivers a clean, elegant structure with strong display appeal.
Although the flat decorative accessories slightly reduce immersion, the observatory dome, excellent printed textures and easy construction make this a memorable and highly attractive build. It works equally well as bookshelf décor, a display piece for a travel-themed room or even as a decorative night light.
For hobbyists seeking something visually different from traditional alleyway or library book nooks, this is one of TOYQI’s most distinctive releases to date.
