The TOYQI Pipe & Deduction Detective Agency is a Sherlock Holmes inspired book nook kit packed with Victorian detective charm. Purchased on Amazon, this build combines printed MDF construction, atmospheric lighting, and a cleverly accessible interior design to create a highly enjoyable display piece.
What immediately stands out about this kit is how practical and builder-friendly the design feels. The assembly is straightforward, the wiring is well thought out, and the overall construction quality is surprisingly solid throughout.
Summary Table
| Category | Rating |
|---|---|
| My Difficulty Rating | 2.5/5 Stars |
| Build Time | Approximately 7 Hours |
| Recommended Skill Level | High Beginner to Intermediate |
| Main Materials | Printed MDF, Acrylic, Oil Paper |
| Lighting Included | Yes |
First Impressions
The kit is made almost entirely from printed MDF, with only minimal use of acrylic, oil paper, and stickers. This gives the finished build a sturdy and cohesive appearance while also reducing some of the more frustrating parts often found in heavily sticker-based kits.
The instructions are printed in full colour and are very easy to follow. Every component was clearly labelled, and the build flow felt logical from start to finish.
One thing I particularly appreciated was the inclusion of spare small pieces on the boards. Thankfully, I did not experience any breakage during assembly, but having backups available is always reassuring.
Build Quality and Assembly Experience

Removing the MDF pieces from the sheets was simple, and unlike some MDF kits, the components separated cleanly without splintering or damage. All of the pieces fitted together very well, making the overall assembly process smooth and relaxing.
This is also one of the better designed interiors I have seen in terms of accessibility. The kit features a side wall that swings open, giving an unobstructed view inside the build. This not only makes photography easier but also allows you to fully appreciate the interior details once completed.
The left side of the structure is framed like a traditional book nook spine and provides ample room for hiding the battery pack and wiring, which keeps the finished display looking tidy.
Another excellent design choice is the elevated floor combined with the spacing between the ceiling and roof panels. This creates plenty of room for routing the overhead LED wiring without crushing cables or struggling for space.
Lighting System

The included lighting system is simple but effective. The kit comes with:
- 4 white LEDs
- 1 yellow LED
- Colour-coded wiring for easier installation
The fireplace uses the static yellow LED positioned behind printed oil paper to simulate a glowing fire effect. While this looked decent as supplied, I decided to customise the build slightly by installing two flickering red LEDs at the base of the fireplace to create a more realistic flame appearance.
This small modification dramatically improved the atmosphere of the finished build and gave the fireplace a far more convincing glow.
Difficulty Level
Although this is not a difficult kit overall, I would place it slightly above true beginner level simply because of the wiring and interior assembly. However, anyone with a little patience and basic experience should complete it comfortably.
The relatively small amount of furniture construction also helps keep the build time manageable and prevents the project from becoming repetitive.
What I Enjoyed Most

One of the biggest strengths of this kit is its balance between detail and simplicity. It captures the atmosphere of a Victorian detective agency without overwhelming the builder with excessive miniature furniture or tiny decorative items.
I also loved the practical design features:
- Swing-open wall for interior access
- Spacious wiring channels
- Easy battery pack concealment
- Clean MDF construction
- Simple but effective lighting system
The Sherlock Holmes inspiration is obvious throughout the design, and the finished model has a wonderfully cosy detective-office atmosphere.
Minor Drawbacks

There were very few negatives during this build, but a couple of small points are worth mentioning:
- The supplied fireplace lighting effect feels slightly basic without modification
- Some builders may prefer more furniture or interior clutter for added realism
- Advanced builders may find the assembly a little too straightforward
None of these issues significantly affect the overall enjoyment of the kit.
Final Verdict
The TOYQI Pipe & Deduction Detective Agency is a highly enjoyable and beginner-friendly detective-themed book nook that delivers excellent presentation without becoming overly complicated.
Its clever layout, accessible interior, and thoughtfully designed lighting system make it one of the more relaxing miniature builds I have completed recently. The Sherlock Holmes inspired styling gives it plenty of character, while the clean MDF construction keeps assembly enjoyable throughout.
For anyone looking for a stylish detective-themed book nook with a manageable build time, this is an excellent addition to a collection.
