The modeller’s work space

I am very lucky to have my own office at home which is where I do my official work from during the day and do my model building in my spare time – well maybe a little bit when I am on conference calls, but don’t tell my boss

I will guide you through some of the most important tools and when you will use them.

What ever project you are working on you need to protect your furniture and a cutting mat should be your first buy. The A3 size is great for both small and large projects and includes a built in measuring guide and angle guidelines.

The ruler is really needed for most book nook kits when you are cutting out shapes from the templates. This one has a cork back which prevents slipping when you’re using a very sharp cutting knife, This large set square is definitely needed if you are building an intermediate/advanced kit where you are gluing walls to floors. These need to be at exactly 90 degrees or else pieces further along in the model will not fit – trust me!

You need lots of storage if you are a serious model maker, what you cannot see here is a large cupboard and a 9 drawer desk which are also full. In my little units on my workbench and I have the tools & products that I use the most frequently, this include

  • Glues
  • Tweezers
  • Cutting knives
  • Tiny screwdrivers
  • Files
  • Sanding sticks

If you are only build pre-bought kits then these are most probably the only tools that you will ever need.

My tiny “man drawer” for modelling. Quite often there are spares or bits I have missed out(!) from a kit and I keep them in this drawer. Sometimes when I am doing another model then you can add these pieces in or even make your model better by using these pieces at no cost.

The tiny brass knobs that I added onto these cupboards were actually potion tops from Harry Potter Magical Forest

I have lots more tools for advanced builds, ship building and custom projects so maybe another day
