Magic Forest

A truly magical kit

Due to potential copyright issues the actual name does not contain the word “Harry Potter” but we all know it is. This was a really fun build and used some materials that I have not used before in a book nook kit. This obviously deviates from the original book nook concept of a rectangular shell but this style is becoming very popular although it does require more display space.

Harry Potter references

A miniature poster showing Sirius Black is still at large shows this is very Harry Potter; this is a tiny poster and when the kit is built you will not even seen.

This picture shows a number of interesting features

  • Cauldron – this is showing green foam spilling over the cauldron. This requires heavily scapping a piece of green felt with a scalpel & tweezers to collect the “foam”
  • Blue light – this was the first kit where I had a different colour light rather than the standard white ones. Tip: when you are testing the lights and have identified the blue one, wrap it in a coil to differentiate it from the other ones.

The bed takes quite a long time to build but it is a wonderful feature. Tip: the material that is supplied for the filling under the cover is not very flexible. I would replace it with cotton wool.

Lighting

The lighting is a complex area of the build as there are 10 separate LEDs so I have written some tips

  • Testing the lights in any kit is part one before you do any assembly whatever the complexity of the lighting circuits.
  • In this kit each LED has 2 wires. They both looked white to me although I was informed by someone else who did this kit that one was very light grey, it was hard to distinguish
  • Therefore when I tested each LED with the battery the wire which was negative I marked with a black marker on the plastic sleeve just above the bare wire
  • Some of these LEDs run a long way from where they are fixed to the battery box so make sure there is no slack when you run them along the path or else they will not reach
  • There are obviously no nice plastic connectors so you have to wind all the positive wires from the LEDs around the positive wire from the battery. They do not stay together easily. If you have a soldering iron then ity can be used or if not, you use plastic heat shrink tubing out this around all the wires and shrink it with a lighter

Final Thoughts.

This is really a wonderful kit and time consumming if you do it propely. Would thoroughly recommend when you are confident on moving to complex builds.
